Supervaluationism and necessarily borderline sentences

چکیده
Pablo Cobreros University of Navarra Abstract The supervaluationist theory of vagueness is committed to a particular notion of logical consequence known as global validity. According to a recent objection, this notion of consequence is more problematic than is usually thought since i) it bears a commitment to some sort of bizarre inferences, ii) this commitment threatens the internal coherence of the theory and iii) we might find counterexamples to classically valid patterns of inference even in the absence of a definitely-operator (or similar device). As a consequence, the supervaluationist theory itself is in trouble. This paper discusses the objection.

Fara ’ s Formula and the Supervaluational Thin Red Line
The focus of this paper is an argument presented by Fara (2010), which is against supervaluationism in the context of vagueness. I show how it applies equally to the branching-time (BT) supervaluationism (first presented in Thomason 1970), but not to the closely related ‘STRL’ semantics of Malpass & Wawer (2012).
متن کاملSupervaluationism and Classical Logic
The supervaluationist theory of vagueness provides a notion of logical consequence that is akin to classical consequence. In the absence of a definitely operator, supervaluationist consequence coincides with classical consequence. In the presence of ‘definitely ’, we might find counterexamples to classically valid patterns of inference within supervaluationist reasoning. Foes of supervaluationi...

Different formal tools are useful for different purposes. For example, when it comes to modelling degrees of belief, probability theory is a better tool than classical logic; when it comes to modelling the truth of mathematical claims, classical logic is a better tool than probability theory. In this paper I focus on a widely used formal tool and argue that it does not provide a good model of a...

Diana Raffman’s book “Unruly Words” is a remarkable achievement and contribution to the study of vagueness. Parts of Raffman’s book had circulated since at least 2008, in particular the last chapter (chapter 5), in which Raffman presents experimental results about dynamic sorites and discusses the phenomenon of hysteresis. My own work over the same period, like that of several colleagues and th...
متن کاملVagueness Has No Function in Law
Islamic building codes require mosques to face Mecca. The further Islam spreads, the more apt are believers to fall into a quandary. X faces Y only when the front of X is closer to Y than any other side of X. So the front of the mosque should be oriented along a shortest path to Mecca. Which way is that? Does the path to Mecca tunnel through the earth? Or does the path follow the surface of the...
